LOU and ELLI
The critically acclaimed Golden Anchor is run by Lou and Ellie Chrysostomou. Lou says:
"I was pulled in by the ear! My dad and uncle had a little shop in Roman Road called The Kipper where, as a boy, I did the spuds. I learnt as I went, going to the fish market when I was older.
When I was 17, I had my own fruit and veg stall and I remember someone offering me a job and saying they could teach me fish and chips. I said I could teach them fish and chips!
I opened my first shop with my wife in Rotherhithe in 1981 and then did a stint selling wet fish.
One day I got a phone call saying the shop my old man and uncle ran was on the market. The price was right, so I bought it.
Because of all of the memories, I quickly got attached and we're still here."
Some fish and chip shops use frozen fish. Golden Anchor uses fresh for a superior taste.
Some shops will also use frozen chips. Golden Anchor buys in potatoes. The occasional rattling noise you can hear from the back is our peeler and chipper.
